A musical legacy is only a legacy if it is transmitted to future generations. Cuban musical culture has been passed on through mainly oral and aural traditions and is less well-known in the United States and around the world than it is in Cuba and the surrounding areas. In today’s digital age, resources abound for gaining knowledge of and for the preservation of a musical culture. This methodology provides an example for introductory study and long-term research of Cuban musical culture.The direction of this methodology is two-fold: 1. Students will gain an introductory knowledge of Cuban history, culture, and music through reading, lecture, media, and individual research. 2. Students will engage in experiential learning through fieldwork in collecting raw material such as interviews/oral histories, audio recordings, and video recordings. Together with faculty, they will proceed with transcription and analysis of the raw material. Research results would be shared with the wider global community through written and oral methods as well as through poster presentations and web-sharing. The goal of both directions is to increase the knowledge of Cuban musical culture by college students in the United States. Fieldwork, transcription, analysis, and dissemination will additionally serve to preserve Cuban musical culture through oral, aural, and visual/written transmission
